If you’ve been thinking about straightening your teeth, you’ve probably already asked yourself this question. Both braces and clear aligners can give you a beautiful, healthy smile — but they work differently, suit different lifestyles, and come with their own set of trade-offs.
As a specialist orthodontist with over 20 years of experience treating patients in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, I want to help you make this challenging decision — not a marketing-driven one.
What Are Traditional Braces?
Braces are fixed appliances — brackets bonded to your teeth, connected by a wire that applies continuous, controlled pressure to move teeth into the correct position. Today’s braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more precise than they were even a decade ago.
At my practice, I use both metal and ceramic (tooth-coloured) brackets, allowing patients to choose based on aesthetics and budget.
Best for:
• Complex cases — severe crowding, significant bite problems, jaw discrepancies, impacted canines
• Children and teenagers who may forget to wear removable appliances
• Patients looking for the most cost-effective fixed solution
• Cases requiring very precise tooth movement
• Patients that cannot commit to wearing removable appliances for 20-22 hours a day
What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners (such as Invisalign, Angel Aligners, SureSmile and similar systems) are a series of custom-made, removable transparent trays that gradually shift your teeth. Each tray is worn for 1–2 weeks before progressing to the next.
The treatment is planned digitally, which means you can actually see a simulation of your final result before you even begin.
Best for:
• Mild to moderate alignment issues
• Some complicated cases can also be treated with Clear Aligners
• Adults and older teens who are disciplined about wearing trays 20–22 hours per day
• Professionals and image-conscious patients who prefer discretion
• Patients who play contact sports or instruments
• Patients looking for less painful way to straighten teeth
• Patients looking for more comfortable way to straighten their teeth
• Faster treatment results (in some cases)
• Patients who travels frequently and cannot attend regular monthly braces adjustment visits
The Key Differences at a Glance
• Visibility: Braces are visible; aligners are nearly invisible
• Compliance: Braces work 24/7; aligners require patient discipline
• Complexity: Braces handle more complex cases better
• Comfort: Aligners generally cause less irritation to cheeks and gums
• Diet: No restrictions with aligners; braces require avoiding hard/sticky foods
• Hygiene: Easier to clean teeth with aligners (they’re removable)
• Cost: Broadly similar in the UAE, though this varies by case complexity
• Availability: Braces require more visits
• Emergencies: Braces sometimes break which requires more emergency visits compared to Aligners which rarely requires emergency visit
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Honestly? The right answer depends on your specific clinical situation — not on what looks appealing in an advertisement.
Some cases that appear simple are better treated with braces. Some moderate cases are ideal for aligners. And some patients start with aligners and need to switch. This is exactly why a proper orthodontic assessment matters.
What I always tell my patients: the appliance is a tool. The diagnosis, treatment planning, and the experience of the orthodontist managing your case is what determines your result.
A Note on ‘Direct-to-Consumer’ Aligner Kits
You may have seen aligner kits advertised online — mail-order trays with no in-person examination. As a specialist, I urge caution. Orthodontic treatment involves moving roots, not just crowns. Without X-rays and a proper clinical assessment, serious and irreversible damage to teeth, roots, and bone can occur. Please consult a qualified specialist before any treatment.
